Obviously this is a book for fans of Donna Leon's series of mysteries featuring the Venice police detective Guido Brunetti. Those books are rightly acclaimed for their skillful evocation of the unique atmosphere of Venice itself, and this book aims to flesh that out, especially for those actually visiting the city.What you get is a compilation of twelve themed walks (Brunetti's neighborhood, expatriate Venice, etc.). Each walk includes a good black-and-white map (evidently really legible only in the printed edition, according to other reviews below) with a route marked and numbered sights shown. Each of the sites appears as a way point in the margin of the text narrative.It is important to note that, as the title indicates, the book seeks to give you a series of walks that each allows you to experience some aspect of the city. The walks are not correlated with individual novels in the series. Likewise no attempt has been made to cite and locate each and every restaurant, bar, or other locale mentioned in the novels. Instead, each walk offers a few specific sites from various of the novels, interspersed with many passages from the novels themselves giving descriptions of how Brunetti sees that part of the city. This also means, incidentally, that there may be a few spoilers if you have not already read deeply into the series of novels.All in all, a pleasant read that does reinforce the atmospherics of the Brunetti novels, but not a thorough compendium of story locales. I have read the printed version and looked forward to this. However, the maps are too small to see, and I can't expand them, so it's impossible to follow the walks. Also, the printed book contains marginal notes about where to turn and occasional notes at the end of the chapter about places to eat or stop for coffee. All that is missing. Only the text is presented. So, if you want to read passages from Donna Leon's novels, fine. If you want this as a handbook for interesting walks, forget it!
